Kim Kardashian faced backlash after releasing her latest SKIMS holiday campaign featuring actress Kate Hudson and her family, which some online critics found insensitive and out of touch, especially given the timing near the tense 2024 U.S. presidential election.

The festive SKIMS ad, set in an extravagant mansion, showcases the Hudson-Hawn family enjoying a lavish holiday feast and indulging in playful antics. However, many followers felt the ad’s excesses, like waving lobsters around and spilling food on the carpet, clashed with the heightened social and political atmosphere. The ad received comments labeling it as “insensitive” and “cringe,” with followers urging Kardashian to “read the room.”

In the ad, the Hudson-Hawn family appears to be having a chaotic yet joyful holiday celebration, surrounded by SKIMS pajamas and various luxury holiday treats. The campaign features Kate Hudson, her three children, her fiancé Danny Fujikawa, and her mother, actress Goldie Hawn. Hudson’s brother Oliver also joins with his wife and three children, as they all partake in the SKIMS holiday fun. Missing from the gathering were Goldie’s longtime partner Kurt Russell and their son Wyatt. The family is seen in a variety of humorous scenes, including children playing with extravagant gifts like e-bikes and e-scooters, as they race through the spacious mansion.  Kardashian posted the campaign on her Instagram, captioning it, “Goldie Hawn, Kate Hudson & Family for SKIMS,” but received mixed reactions.

Many followers felt that the campaign’s theme of luxury and indulgence didn’t resonate with the political moment and suggested that the display was “out of touch” given the gravity of recent events. One follower remarked, “Girl, please. Completely out of touch,” while others found the visuals of children riding bikes through opulent hallways and spilling expensive seafood dishes a bit excessive for the holiday season. Despite the criticism, Kate Hudson expressed her support with a heart emoji on Kardashian’s Instagram post, while both Kim and Kate have remained silent regarding the campaign’s online reactions. Still images from the campaign shared by Kardashian also showcased the Hudson-Hawn family dressed in matching pajamas and posing with one another, creating a warm, affectionate atmosphere that contrasted with the online perception of the ad as overly extravagant.

Kardashian’s campaign debuted just days after the 2024 U.S. election, in which Donald Trump won the presidency, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris. While many of Kardashian’s peers publicly endorsed their preferred candidates, Kardashian refrained from making an endorsement. This election cycle, Kardashian noticeably did not share her views publicly, although her long-time friendship with Ivanka Trump, who she wished a happy birthday on social media, remains evident. Kardashian’s recent post honoring Ivanka on her birthday featured throwback photos and heartfelt captions, highlighting their years-long friendship, which reportedly strengthened after their collaboration on prison reform during the Trump administration.

The friendship between Kardashian and Ivanka Trump has evolved over the years, with the pair first bonding at the 2014 Met Gala. Their connection reportedly deepened when they joined forces on prison reform initiatives during Donald Trump’s presidency. Kardashian’s advocacy for criminal justice reform, especially her role in securing clemency for Alice Marie Johnson, was a significant moment in their professional relationship. Kardashian and Ivanka’s bond over motherhood has also helped them stay connected over the years, as both women have balanced public roles with family life.
