Kylie shared her take on the space-traveling heroine on Instagram, dressed in a futuristic silver ensemble reminiscent of the movie’s legendary costumes. The look included a metallic bra-lette paired with a flowing cape and a toy ray gun, styled with a voluminous blonde hairstyle that perfectly captured the retro aesthetic of the original film. Her post, reaching nearly 400 million followers, celebrates Fonda’s portrayal while offering a modern spin on the unforgettable character.

*Barbarella* began as a French comic strip by Jean-Claude Forest before being adapted into the famous 1968 sci-fi film directed by Roger Vadim, Jane Fonda’s then-husband. The movie gained cult status for its cheeky humor, imaginative visuals, and daring approach to sexual freedom. Vadim, a renowned French filmmaker, was known for casting iconic actresses in provocative roles, from Brigitte Bardot to Catherine Deneuve. Fonda, however, initially had reservations about playing Barbarella. In her documentary, *Jane Fonda in Five Acts,* she revealed her discomfort with the overtly sexual role and her personal insecurities about her body, struggles that made it challenging to connect with the confident space traveler.

Jane Fonda has since shared that Vadim’s vision for the film aimed to merge the sci-fi genre with his distinct touch of sensuality. Fonda’s insecurities were pushed to the limit during the now-infamous opening scene where Barbarella floats in zero gravity, gradually undressing in what has been described as a “space striptease.” Fonda was so anxious about the scene that she admitted to drinking vodka beforehand to calm her nerves. Ironically, the scene had to be reshot after an unexpected technical mishap involving a stray bat, forcing Fonda to film while both drunk and hungover. The plot of *Barbarella* follows its titular character as she navigates a galaxy filled with unusual villains and challenges, one of the most notorious being a scientist with an “Excessive Machine” that claims to cause death by overwhelming pleasure.

The film blends camp humor with fantastical elements, earning it a distinct place in pop culture history and Fonda a reputation for pioneering bold roles for women in film. Over time, Fonda grew to appreciate the film, even expressing fondness for it in her later years, despite initially viewing it as politically incorrect. News broke last year that *Barbarella* would be revived, this time with *Euphoria* star Sydney Sweeney cast in the lead role. Fonda, however, has expressed some skepticism about the reboot, admitting to *The Hollywood Reporter* that she is trying “not to” think about it. She feels the original film, with different direction, could have been a more robust feminist statement. Vadim, however, directed it with a lens that emphasized visual style and sensuality, leaving Fonda to navigate a complex, groundbreaking role for women in film.

In fact, Fonda once proposed a sequel that would see *Barbarella* return with an exciting new twist. At a British Film Institute event, she shared her vision of a follow-up in which *Barbarella* would be in a grandmother role, leading a team of women on a rescue mission for her daughter, a character Fonda envisioned being played by Angelina Jolie. This imaginative idea would pay homage to the legacy of the original while adding a contemporary edge, emphasizing female camaraderie and strength. Kylie’s nod to *Barbarella* not only evokes Fonda’s iconic role but also highlights the enduring appeal of the character’s rebellious, confident spirit. With her Halloween tribute, Kylie captures the spirit of the 1960s icon, blending vintage Hollywood glamour with a modern flair, celebrating both the power and style of a sci-fi heroine who continues to inspire new generations.
