Kourtney Kardashian's latest weight loss supplement, priced at £70, has come under scrutiny from health experts, who caution that it may cause more harm than good.

The supplement, called Lemme GLP-1 Daily Capsules, is marketed as a natural alternative to weight loss medications like Ozempic, featuring plant-based ingredients said to aid in slimming. However, experts warn that the capsules could lead to uncomfortable side effects such as nausea and uncontrollable diarrhea, with limited scientific backing to support the product's claims.

Lemme GLP-1 Daily Capsules are promoted as helping to curb cravings and reduce fat levels. Although Kardashian doesn't explicitly compare her product to the popular drug Ozempic, the name alludes to GLP-1, a hormone that these medications target to assist in weight loss. Unlike synthetic GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, Saxenda, and Wegovy, which are proven to suppress hunger, Lemme’s capsules claim to imitate the effects of GLP-1 naturally. But experts question these claims, describing them as "clever marketing" with little scientific basis.

Professor Gunter Kuhnle, an expert in nutrition from the University of Reading, explained that while the plant extracts in the supplement — lemon fruit, saffron, and red orange — are rich in flavonoids, there is no evidence they can produce significant weight loss. Flavonoids, found in many plants, have been studied for their potential to boost energy expenditure and reduce fat absorption. Still, according to Kuhnle, the benefits are modest at best, and they do not operate in the same powerful way as GLP-1 drugs. Moreover, excessive consumption of flavonoids can cause digestive issues, including nausea, diarrhea, and, in rare cases, liver damage. The Lemme GLP-1 supplement contains three key ingredients: Eromin Lemon Fruit Extract, Supresa Saffron Extract, and Morosil Red Orange Fruit Extract.

While limited research suggests these ingredients may help stabilize blood sugar in prediabetic individuals or slightly suppress appetite, the effects are far from a "magic bullet" for weight loss. For instance, a small study funded by the patent holder of Eriomin, a lemon extract, found that participants who took it for 12 weeks had lower blood glucose levels, but the study’s size and results were not conclusive. Similarly, research funded by the patent holders of the saffron and blood orange extracts showed minor improvements in snacking habits and BMI, but these studies also involved controlled diets and exercise, making it difficult to determine the true effect of the supplements.

Professor Naveed Sattar, a cardiometabolic expert from the University of Glasgow, also expressed skepticism, emphasizing that while there may be slight benefits from taking these supplements, they pale in comparison to proven, evidence-based weight loss therapies. He warned that products like Lemme GLP-1 should not be marketed as serious weight loss interventions, especially for those seeking to lose significant amounts of weight. Despite these criticisms, Kardashian's Lemme brand continues to sell a range of wellness products, including gummy vitamins designed to aid digestion and relaxation.  However, this is not the first time the reality star's wellness claims have been challenged.

Last year, her vaginal wellness gummies were criticized by gynecologists, who argued there was no scientific merit to the claims they could improve vaginal health. In the broader context of weight loss, drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy have revolutionized the treatment of obesity, though they come with risks when used improperly. As concerns grow over the misuse of these medications for cosmetic purposes, experts urge caution in the use of unregulated supplements like Lemme GLP-1.
