Bronx Zoo of United States of America have announced one of the tiger in their zoo have tested positive proving that even animals can be the victim of Coronavirus Covid-19 not only human beings.
Nadia, 4-year-old Malayan tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York, has become the first of her kind to test positive for the coronavirus after she was seen developing symptoms of Coronavirus like dry cough but fortunately is expected to recover, the Wildlife Conservation Society's Bronx Zoo said in a news release.
Nadia's test result was confirmed by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Iowa. Nadia also has other siblings like her sister Azul, as well as two Amur tigers in the zoo along with other three African lions who also seem to shown light symptoms of dry cough but haven't been tested for Corona yet.
According to news release, all the tigers are believed to have infected by a zoo keeper but fortunately all are expected to fully recover. Zoo authority said in the statement, "We tested the cat [Nadia] out of an abundance of caution and will ensure any knowledge we gain about Covid-19 will contribute to the world's continuing understanding of this novel coronavirus," They also added, "The big cats did have some decrease in appetite but are otherwise doing well under veterinary care and are bright, alert, and interactive with their keepers".
The tigers are closely being monitored from now on and anyone sick with the coronavirus is being advised to minimize contact with animals, including pets, until more information is known about the virus, the USDA said. Likewise, Conservation experts have warned that the virus could pose a threat to some wildlife like the great apes - and have said measures are needed to reduce the risk of wild gorillas, chimps and orangutans.
