Kim Kardashian shared photos on Instagram Monday from last week's Palm Desert Janet Jackson concert, where she wore Jackson's iconic outfit from the 1993 "If" music video, which she purchased for $25,000.
The 43-year-old billionaire engaged her 362 million followers with numerous snapshots from the event, captioning them with Janet's lyrics: "that’s the way love goes." Kim was accompanied by her younger sister Khloe Kardashian, 39, and their mother Kris Jenner, 68, in some of the photos.
The SKIMS founder showcased her toned abs in the sexy black ensemble, which included a cropped vest and matching suede, fringed trousers. This comes after critics online slammed the mother-of-four for the extravagant purchase at a 2021 auction. Upon revealing that she was attending Jackson's concert in the archival outfit, social media users took to X to condemn her choice.
One user complained, "Buying historical pieces just for the kick of it, UGH!" while another described her actions as "cringe." Some questioned why she has so many of the Jacksons' clothes, with one user asking, "Why the hell does she have a lot of the Jacksons' clothes? Why them??" Another disgruntled user wondered if she would damage the garments like she "ruined Marilyn Monroe’s dress" at the 2022 Met Gala. However, the owner of Monroe's gown clarified that Kim "did not, in any way, damage the garment."
Despite the backlash from Janet Jackson fans, the music legend gave Kim her blessing at the time of the purchase. In May 2021, Kim posted a photo of Janet from the "If" video, expressing her excitement over winning the outfit. Janet responded with gratitude, saying, "Thank u so much @kimkardashian I hope 'IF' gives u as much pleasure as it did me," along with three kiss emojis.
Juliens Auctions also announced Kim's purchase on X (formerly Twitter) with a photo of the outfit on a mannequin and a note that read: "SOLD for $25,000! A custom-made top with a pair of black pants, both worn by Janet Jackson in her 1993 award-winning 'If' music video. Sold in our 'Iconic Treasures from the Legendary Career and Life of Janet Jackson' auction at JuliensLive.com! w/ @JanetJackson." The outfit features low-rise trousers with fringe down the sides and a sleek, cropped vest with buttons and thin white shells sewn onto either side.
