Over the weekend, I finally caught up on Netflix's documentary about Pamela Anderson, where the Baywatch star candidly discussed her decision to have a chest surgery in the 1990s.

Little did she know that this choice would subject her to relentless scrutiny and judgment, with people feeling entitled to make constant remarks and jokes about her appearance. This pattern of sexist treatment towards women in the public eye isn't new, and we can draw a parallel to the present situation with Kylie Jenner, who recently admitted to having a breast augmentation when she was 19. In an episode of The Kardashians, Jenner expressed her concerns about her five-year-old daughter, Stormi, facing similar pressures in the future.

She revealed that she wished she could have done things differently and emphasized her hope that Stormi wouldn't feel the need to alter her body at a young age. Of course, whenever a woman makes choices about her own body, there tends to be backlash and criticism. Jenner has faced accusations of lying and setting unrealistic beauty standards that ordinary women could never achieve without augmentation. Some have pointed out the timing of her revelation, conveniently aligning with the current trend of thinner female silhouettes, thanks to the influence of certain products like Ozempic.

However, attributing the entire beauty industry and societal pressures solely to one individual is far too simplistic. It's unfair to place the blame solely on a 25-year-old woman for promoting unattainable beauty ideals without considering that she might be struggling with those standards herself. The Kardashian and Jenner sisters have been in the public eye for nearly two decades, and their bodies have become central to the conversation surrounding female appearance. They have influenced modern beauty ideals through their curves, lips, hair, and contouring, successfully launching various brands in the process. Kylie, for instance, gained popularity with her makeup line and lip kits. Back in 2015, she initially denied having lip fillers, but later admitted to the procedure, leading to skepticism among consumers.

Fame often comes with a Faustian bargain for women based on their looks: they are put on pedestals and monetize their appearance, but in return, their physical attributes are constantly scrutinized and their stories dissected. Pamela Anderson experienced this phenomenon as well, with her body becoming public property due to her career, leading to harmful criticism and objectification. Perhaps we need to acknowledge that both sides can coexist: Jenner might have been a victim of societal pressures to meet impossible beauty standards, while simultaneously contributing to raising the bar for a new generation.

Even the Kardashians and Jenners themselves struggle to maintain the ideals they've helped set. For example, Khloe's older sister, Khloe, once overheard their mother, Kris Jenner, suggesting that she needed a nose job when she was only nine years old. Isn't it disheartening to see the impact of these beauty standards on young women, including Jenner herself? Shouldn't we commend her for publicly expressing regret about undergoing surgery as a teenager? Many parents with daughters like her would likely appreciate her honesty and hope it leads to more open conversations about body image and self-acceptance.
