The Weeknd opened up to the 'Esquire' in a new interview that there are going to be only six songs on the album he wrote after splitting with Selena Gomez in 2017.

The Weeknd, aka Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, 30, recently appeared in an interview with the 'Esquire' where he revealed about writing breakup songs to be cathartic. The famous singer was asked to name five songs of him which defined him better during his interview. And interestingly he named no tracks from his 2018 EP but My Dear Melancholy. The record released months after he broke up with Selena Gomez, and the song also has many references to Selena. Not only Selena, but the song also referred to his other ex as well, and that is Bella Hadid!

Although he didn't name any track from EP, he did talk about writing the album with the Esquire. “The reason why it was so short is like, I think I just had nothing else to say on this,” he said. “Whatever. It was just, like, this cathartic piece of art. And yeah, it was short, because that’s all I had to say on the situation.” However, he confirmed that writing the record made him feel better after the breakup. “That would have sucked if it didn’t,” the singer added.

Just a month after splitting with Bella, The Weeknd started dating Selena in Jan. 2017 but they didn't last long as they broke up in October of that same year. After splitting, Selena also didn't take long to start spending time with his ex, Justin Bieber again. On the other hand, Weeknd also go back with Bella in 2018 but they split again in 2019.

The song that created the buzz about Weeknd and Selena's relationship from My Dear Melancholy was “Call Out My Name.” The lyrics of the song went like, “I helped you out of a broken place” and “Guess I was just another pit stop ’til you made up your mind,” referring to Selena getting back together with Justin.

Weeknd even hinted about giving one of his kidneys to Selena when she needed a transplant in 2017, which she eventually got from Francia Raisa, her friend. “I almost cut a piece of myself for your life,” he sang. What pure love!
