Ernesto Valverde: Future at FC Barcelona?

FC Barcelona announced today that their present coach Ernesto Valverde has signed a new contract extension up to the 2019/2020 season with an option to increase the length to 2020/2021 season.

Valverde who joined the club at the beginning of last season delivered the La Liga and Copa Del Ray title in his first season. Barca are currently on the hunt for all three major titles which are La Liga, Copa Del Ray and the UEFA Champions League. Although extending his contract doesn’t guarantee his position next season to remain in charge of FC Barcelona, the things could change if Valverde fails to deliver a trophy or bow out of the UEFA Champions League in early stage of the knockout competition.

The news of the contract extension wasn’t greeted nicely by the fans on social media. The social media critics have always expressed their concern on the playing style implemented by Valverde to the current Barca team. They think that his style of play doesn’t suit the team and is boring to watch. The general playing style is 4-3-3 based possession football which is attacking in nature, But, Valverde has implemented a 4-2-2 based formation which is somewhat defensive.
FC Barcelona currently sit on the top of La Liga table with 6 points clear of their arch rivals Real Madrid, are in the semifinals of the Copa Del Ray and in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League. The future of their current manager lies on how they end up in all three competitions come May.
